Classroom Attention Getters! ๐Ÿ“ฃ Making Them Work For You!!

โ€‹

Hello Reader!

I loved going on field trips, and we were given a class budget to encourage us to go out on them. Even more importantly, we could book the school mini-bus if we could find a driver. These details made going on field trips so much easier.

I was eager to head out on a field trip in September because here in the Okanagan some of the October days are lovely and some . . . not so much ๐Ÿฅถ.

Of course, it would be perfect if we could know which days were which when heading on a field trip, but we didn't.

So, getting one of the field trips in during September got the year started off well. I always felt doing this created a sense of engagement amongst the students as the field trip communicated that fun things were coming their way this year.

The issue of taking field trip so early is, of course, whether or not classroom management is sufficiently established to keep the students safe and well-managed. To rush a field trip when even one child is not ready to follow instructions is both unsafe, and it does not build rapport with parents to see a teacher flailing to control the class.

For field trips to be successful I had to work hard in the first few weeks to establish:

  • classroom expectations
  • classroom consequences
  • consistent routines and procedures

By establishing these I established my authority, and the students became very well attuned to responding quickly when I signalled the time to pay attention.

Once my authority and an immediate response to my classroom attention getter were in place, a good portion of what I needed to keep them safe was also in place.

This week's blog post and video are all about classroom attention getters. In addition to a few different examples, including my personal favourites, I include strategies for implementing classroom attention getters effectively.

TL;DR

  • This week's blog post and video are about getting the attention of students in the classroom.

That's it for this week! I appreciate you sharing your time with me today! Hit reply with questions or requests.

Cheers for now!

Engaging Curiosity

P.S. Often when I only have time for a quick stroll I head to this nearby park. The pathway for much of the walk is paved, and I love the people and dogs I meet and chat with, the trees, children playing soccer and just being in the community.
